Storage, databases, and backups
Add persistent storage or a database of your own, and set up your own backups.
Applications that keep data need storage set up before you deploy them. You do that in Storage & backups in the portal, not in your Git repository.
The portal shows which storage and services your account can create right now. What is available depends on your plan, your quota, and what has been enabled for you.
Add persistent storage
- Open Storage & backups.
- Pick the namespace the application runs in.
- Describe the volume you need: size, storage class, and access mode.
- Check the quota, cost, and any warnings the portal shows you.
- Save, and wait until the portal reports the volume as ready.
- Reference the volume from your deployment manifests.
Creating the volume in the portal does not attach it to your application. Your manifest still has to reference it. Until it does, the volume exists but nothing uses it.
Run your own database
A database you run yourself is described in your Git repository like any other application, for example with one of the installed database operators. You set up its storage as above. You decide its version, size and updates.
If the portal will not let you do something, it tells you why. When the reason is that your account does not currently cover it, ask for it.
Backups
You back up the data of your own applications entirely yourself. The platform has no backup feature for it, and we do not restore such data on request.
- Set up backups with your database operator's backup feature and a storage target you own, for example your own object storage.
- Deliver the credentials for it through your secret store, and allow the route to the storage target with a network rule.
- Test your restore regularly. A backup that has never been restored is a guess.
Mirrored storage keeps three copies on separate machines. It protects against losing a machine, but not against deleted or corrupted data. It does not replace a backup.
If you want us to back up your data, have us run the application as a Managed App: we then take care of backups, restores and restore tests as the service description sets out. We also back up the data of platform extensions such as gh0steye and gh0stforge, daily with 14 days of retention. As a business you can also book hours of advice and hands-on help with the setup at any time.
